  3. Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ (WPS)

 This article will let you know the steps about how to set up the Range Extender using the Setup Wizard.
Before you start the setup procedure, ensure these requirements:

  • You should have an active wireless network connection
  • Wireless network name (SSID) and wireless password of your wireless network.

So let’s begin with the setup procedure:
  Step 1:
 Firstly, plug the Linksys RE6800 into any power outlet.
NOTE:  Wait until the Light Emitting Diode (LED) change to orange.   

Step 2:
Connect your device using any mobile device or a computer system to the Linksys RE6800 default SSID, which is Linksys Extender Setup – xxx, where xxx denotes the last three characters of the Linksys RE6800 extender’s MAC address. 

QUICK TIP:  The MAC address of your Linksys RE6800 is located on the label at the backside of the device. 

Step 3:
Open any web browser in any of the wireless devices such as mobile or computer and then enter “ or “” in the Address bar to begin the setup.

Step 4:
As the setup screen appears, tick ( ✔️) the box beside the I accept the End User License Agreement and then click on Start Setup.

Step 5:
 Once you are done, create an admin password and your password hint ( if you want as it is optional ) then click on Save as you are once done.

Now, select the As a wireless range extender option then clicks on Next.

Step 7:
Then, select your existing wireless network and then enter your password when it is asked.

NOTE:  If you have a dual-band network, you must check the SSID of both bands.

QUICK TIP:  If you have a hidden SSID then click on Manually Enter Network Name and Password.  Otherwise, wait until it detects your wireless network and select your network by its own.

Step 8:
Now create your extended Network names and wireless Passwords.  Click the refresh  icon in order to update the list

NOTE:  This is that network that your wireless clients will connect to.  You can use the same name for both networks.

Step 9:.
This extender has a Spot Finder feature which will determine the signal strength of your Linksys RE6800 AC1750 range extender to the root AP.

  If it highlights too far or too close then simply unplug it, move it accordingly and then reconnect to the extenders’ default SSID and go then go back to step 1.

Step 10:
 Once you are done with this then your device will automatically check for the latest available firmware and update it by itself.

 So finally your Linksys RE6800 extender is now set up in Range Extender mode.

Once You have a setup you will also receive instructions to view or change the Linksys RE6800’s settings.

When the Linksys RE6800 extender is in Range Extender mode, the top header will read Dual-Band Wireless Range Extender.  After setup, you can log into the web-based setup page to view the upgraded top header name.

Wait until the Light Emitting Diode (LED)  change to orange

As the light turned orange, press the WPS button featured on your wireless router.

Press the WPS button on the Linksys RE6800.  The WPS button will light up and the indicator LED on the front of the range extender will blink green. Once the front indicator turns solid green, the connection is successful.

If you want to extend your 5 GHz network, repeat Steps 3 to 5.

Step 2:
Click on the Manual Setup link to bypass the Setup Wizard.

Step 4:
First, select the Operation Mode you need for your network.

Configure your manual settings for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz on the Wireless > Basic Settings page.
NOTE:  The default mode when choosing Manual Setup is Wireless Range Extender mode. You will see an orange bar across the page stating that the upstream connection is not configured as you will click the manual option.  

At this point, you can go straight to the Site Survey page in order to select the upstream connection if you want to keep it in Wireless Range Extender mode, otherwise, click on Change under Operation Mode and select the Access Point mode and follow the instructions.

QUICK TIP:  Click on the drop-down arrow for User-added image and then select wireless options according to your choice for the two bands.
Step 6:
Click on Save once you are done to apply changes.

Blinking green

This light indicates-

  • Upgrading firmware

Solid green

Process to update the firmware

Step 1: Open any web browser to log in to the web-based setup page of your range extender.

  There are three methods to log in to the web-based setup page:-

NOTE:   If your Linksys range extender is not yet configured, its default IP Address is

 Once your wireless range extender is already configured you will need to look up the IP Address in your router’s DHCP table.  

  • For RE6400,enter http://RE6x00-xxx for Windows users or http://RE6x00-xxx.local for Mac users.

  Where xxx are the last three characters of the extender’s MAC Address.

Step 2:
You will be asked for a Password.  If you have changed your password then enter your custom password.  Otherwise, enter the default “admin” on the Password field.

On the web-based setup page, click Firmware Upgrade which is under Administration.

There are two methods for upgrading the Linksys RE6400 firmware

  1. Automatic update

In this, the range extender will automatically detect if there is any new available firmware.  If there is any update available, click the Update now button to start upgrading the firmware.

If you want for future firmware files to automatically update, select the Auto-update range extender when improvements are available checkbox.

  • Manual update

If you want to manually update the firmware, click Select a File and select the firmware file that you have downloaded earlier.

Then click on Open.

Step 5:
 Now, click on Save.
